Favorite Music

Music from the Ace Attorney Video Game Series

Ace Attorney is a series of video games (first released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance) where the player is a lawyer in a fictional version of the United States. In a interesting design choice, the series uses memorable musical themes for each of its characters, environments, and scenarios. As a result, the collective soundtrack to this game series has taken on a life of its own, far beyond the confines of the video games. By this count, at least 29 albums of music have been officially released by the studio Capcom, with untold numbers of unofficial covers and remixes by fans.

Below are some of my favorite songs and albums from the series. In fact, there's even a meme for this very act of having Ace Attorney playlists. I hope you enjoy the music and resonate with some of the intense emotions contained therein.

Jazz Album - Phoenix Wright Cadenza

According to this forum post, this fan-made album was made by a now defunct band "Magical Trick Society" and was posted to YouTube 14 years ago on March 3rd, 2008. It's an upbeat, skillfully performed, eclectic album of songs inspired by the series. It's a work of art that lingers in relative obscurity because of its somewhat distant connection to the game series. After years of listening to it on and off, I'm here to champion it.

Favorite Parts:
1. Highly skilled musicians
2. Fun, jazzy beat in songs
3. Deep, intense emotions in songs

Other Music from the Ace Attorney Series

By far, my favorite songs from this series are all the covers and arrangements of "The Fragrance of Dark Coffee." This song plays when we see a character named Godot who will have a fresh cup of espresso slide right in front of him in court, giving him that extra pep to be his best. However, my favorite individual song is the jazz arrangement for "Trucy's Theme - Child of Magic." Truly, this is one of the most uplifting songs I've ever heard. You can find both, and more, on the playlist below.

Favorite Parts:
1. Highly skilled musicians
2. Memorable beats and good vibes
3. Interesting blends of jazz and orchestra music

The Ace Attorney Musical "The Turnabout Encounter"

The music is so catchy that it's even been adapted to multiple musicals, both officially produced by Capcom ones and unofficially by fans. The link below goes to a completely fan-made musical that starts right at the first song.

Favorite Parts:
1. Makes court seem more fun than it really is (even for people who don't know anything about legal issues)
2. The themes and ending feel good
3. This musical does a great job representing the design, style, and main characters from the series
4. The self-aware jokes and references are fun for fans to notice
